Doncaster
CITY
Introduction: Doncaster is a City located in South Yorkshire, and lying next to the River Don, which it is named after. It has an urban population of 159,000.
Brief History: Doncaster’s roots are Roman when a fort called Danum was built in the First Century. In the 9th Century the town got his recognisable name in Anglo Saxon- Donne ceaster.
In the middle ages Richard !st granted a Town Charter and a Market charter followed in 1248. Many Friars also descended on the town in this period. The town was Royalist in the Civil War
After slow expansion the town developed quickly and in the 19th century saw the arrival of the railway, with its own carriage works and a Corn Exchange, Market Hall and Guildhall, Coal mining was a major industry into the 20th Century. The town expanded greatly in the past century helped by sitting on the main London to Edinburgh railway line and the same cities being linked via the A1 road which runs through the city. This gave it links to the rest of the country.
With the closure of the coal mines and heavy industry the town turned to the service sector, successfully. In 2022 Doncaster applied for and was granted city status.
